Slot Myths The first of these slot machine myths concerns the idea that slot machines run in pay and take cycles. The truth is that today’s slot machines run off of what is called a random number generator. This random number generator takes “seed values” from a long list of variables that are determined at the time of the spin which, in laymen’s terms means that at the exact time you press the “Spin” button, random results are “drawn” from the random number generator, translated, and mapped to slot reel positions. This process is how the positions of the reels in a slot machine are determined, not a cycle of any kind. Another one of the most common slot machine myths is the thought that a slot machine that you just stopped playing, which hits a jackpot moments later, would have been paying you off had you continued playing. This can be classified as a myth based on the random numbers generated at the beginning of each spin. Once again, the random number generator used makes sure that all of the spins, individually, are completely random and have no pattern whatsoever. Yet another myth centers around the concept that you can calculate the odds of winning on a certain slot machine by counting the symbols on each wheel. Wrong again. The random number generator generates numbers for each spin. Each number corresponds to each symbol on each reel. There are hundreds of possible stops on each reel, so even though you may only see 25 symbols on each reel, the RNG may have 250 or more stops programmed for each reel. This ability to generate millions of combinations is why most slots can offer such large payouts. The myth that you should start out with less than the maximum allowed coins until you start winning was born from the idea that you can “warm up” the machine. This ill-fated idea can prove costly, because, if you actually do hit the jackpot, but aren’t betting the max bet, you will not win the full amount that you could have been entitled to. If you can not afford the max bet at one machine, move on to another one that has a smaller max bet. Another myth that we came across was that the casino can choose to reward a loyal player by “giving” them the jackpot win. Once again, the random number generator comes into play with this myth. The casino owners have no control over who gets the jackpot. If such a “magic button” existed, it would be illegal and the casino would get into a lot of trouble. The casino owners have no choice but to leave it up to the random number generator to determine jackpot winners. They may do a lot of things, but there is no way for an owner to just “give” out a jackpot win.
